Albania winter road trips
Choose a route for the weather, not just the map. Tirana, Berat and Vlorë make a flexible culture-and-coast trip; Korçë is an inland alternative with greater exposure to snow and ice. Neither itinerary is a current road-clearance report.

Before you drive: current road checks
Check ARRSH road-condition notices and Albanian State Police updates shortly before departure and again after snowfall or heavy rain. Obey road signs, restrictions and officers. Dated reports are snapshots, not guarantees that a road will remain open.
- Qafë Thanë and the Korçë approach: check conditions for inland travel; ice can be a concern even without fresh snow.
- Llogara: confirm the intended route and any tunnel or pass notices. A tunnel does not remove weather risks on its approaches.
- Rruga e Kombit and Kalimash: check current national-road and tunnel notices before a northern journey.
- Theth, Valbonë and remote mountain roads: do not treat summer navigation estimates as a winter itinerary. Confirm access locally and with authorities, and postpone if conditions are uncertain.
Tyres, chains and safe driving
Carry equipment suitable for the reported snow and ice conditions and follow route-specific instructions. We do not claim a verified nationwide winter-equipment rule for 15 November–15 March. Confirm current requirements with the authorities and the rental agency.
- Ask for suitable tyres and correctly sized chains; understand how to fit them before leaving.
- Drive unfamiliar rural and mountain sections in daylight, with extra time between stops.
- Avoid driving into standing water; reduce speed and increase following distance on wet or icy roads.
- Carry warm layers, water, a charged phone and offline navigation; do not rely on phone coverage in remote areas.
- An SUV label does not guarantee all-wheel drive, winter tyres or safe braking on ice. Four-wheel drive is not permission to enter a closed road.
3 days: Tirana → Berat → Vlorë → Tirana
- Tirana to Berat: depart after checking the forecast, visit the old quarters and stay overnight. Walk castle streets only in suitable conditions.
- Berat to Vlorë: continue in daylight, then explore the seafront or historic centre between showers. An extra Berat day is the rain-day alternative.
- Vlorë to Tirana: return with time to spare. Keep a Riviera or Llogara detour out of a tight departure-day schedule.
This keeps mountain exposure lower than an Alps-focused trip, but it is not risk-free or guaranteed snow-free. Rain, wind, flooding and temporary restrictions can affect lower-elevation roads too.
2 days: Tirana → Elbasan → Korçë → Tirana
- Day 1: drive to Korçë via the main inland route after checking conditions; visit the Old Bazaar and stay overnight.
- Day 2: explore the city before a daylight return. Add Voskopojë or Dardhë only if road access and the forecast are confirmed and sufficient daylight remains.
For a relaxed visit, add another night rather than combining both villages with a long return drive. If snow or ice is reported and you are not equipped or experienced, choose a city-only stay or postpone the drive.
Which rental car fits a winter trip?
An economy or compact car may suit city travel and main-road journeys in suitable conditions. For inland winter travel, choose by tyres, equipment, ground clearance and the agency's route guidance—not category alone.
- Confirm the actual car or substitution policy, gearbox and passenger/luggage space.
- Ask whether winter tyres and compatible chains are included or charged separately.
- Confirm roadside assistance, insurance exclusions, deposit and mountain-road restrictions.
- Check pickup and return arrangements on holiday dates.
- The marketplace does not certify winter equipment from a car category. Obtain written confirmation from the agency before booking.
Winter road-trip questions
Are Albania's main roads always open in winter?
No route is guaranteed open. Use current official notices and change your plan when weather or restrictions require it.
Should I rent a 4x4?
Not automatically. Route conditions, appropriate tyres and experience matter; a 4x4 does not solve icy braking or closures.
Can I cross the Theth–Valbonë trail?
Do not include the high mountain crossing in an ordinary winter sightseeing trip. Snow, avalanche exposure and access require specialist assessment; it is not a road link between the valleys.
