Mountain and heritage towns

  • Berat — stay in or near the Mangalem or Gorica quarters to walk to the castle.
  • Gjirokastër — the old bazaar area is steep but atmospheric; the new town is flatter and closer to buses.
  • Theth and Valbona — family-run guesthouses with meals included are the norm; book ahead in summer and bring cash.
  • Shkodër — the pedestrian centre is ideal for reaching Lake Shkodër and transport to the Alps.

Practical tips

  • Check whether parking is included if you rent a car — central streets are tight.
  • Ask if heating is available for stays from November to March.
  • Small properties often prefer cash; see our cash and cards guide.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Tirana for first-time visitors?
The centre around Skanderbeg Square and Pazari i Ri. Most museums, the castle walls and the main bus to the airport are within walking distance.
Is Blloku a good place to stay?
Yes if you want cafés and evening life on your doorstep. Light sleepers should choose a street-facing room carefully, as weekends are lively until late.
Sarandë or Ksamil — which is better as a base?
Sarandë is better for a longer stay: services run all year, buses connect to Gjirokastër and the Blue Eye, and the ferry goes to Corfu. Ksamil is better for beach days and the islands but is very crowded in July–August and quiet out of season.
Where should I stay on the Riviera without a car?
Sarandë or Himarë. Both have regular bus connections. Dhërmi and remote coves are hard to reach without a car outside summer.
When should I book accommodation on the coast?
For July and August, book well ahead. In May, June, September and October you usually have plenty of choice and lower prices.
