Albanian Alps

Theth, Valbona and the Accursed Mountains

The Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Nemuna, the 'Accursed Mountains') are Europe's last true wilderness — glacial valleys, stone towers and shepherd villages linked by the legendary Theth–Valbona hike and the Lake Koman ferry.

Best time to visit

June to mid-October. The Theth–Valbona pass is only safe when snow-free (usually mid-June to early October).

Getting there

Bus/minivan Tirana → Shkodër (~2h), then Koman ferry (3h) → Valbona, or 4×4 road to Theth.

Why visit
  • One of Europe's best multi-day hikes for under €50/day
  • Traditional stone-tower guesthouses (kulla) with home-cooked meals
  • Lake Koman ferry — one of the world's most scenic boat rides
