Beaches, hiking and driving in October
Beaches
A month of two halves. Until about the 15th, swimming is realistic and beaches are yours alone. After that, expect closed beach bars and cooler water — the coast becomes a walking destination.
Hiking
Very good at low and mid altitude: Osumi, Llogara, Dajti, Gjipe and the Vjosa valley. High alpine routes get risky late in the month as the first snow and short daylight arrive. The Theth–Valbona crossing is usually still walkable in the first half of October with an early start, but treat it as a weather-window decision, not a fixed plan, and confirm conditions with your guesthouse the day before. Guesthouses in Theth start closing after mid-month.
Road trips
Fine conditions with light traffic and open passes, though rain fronts can be heavy. Mountain roads to Theth are still passable in early October but should be treated cautiously after storms. The Llogara Pass is at its best — clear air, autumn colour, no summer queues.

Bunk'Art 1 & 2, Tirana
Two vast Cold War bunker museums on opposite sides of Tirana. A full day underground, and arguably better in the rain — pair Bunk'Art 2 with the nearby House of Leaves surveillance museum.
House of Leaves, Tirana
The former Sigurimi surveillance headquarters, now a museum on communist-era spying. Small, absorbing and entirely indoors — ideal for a wet afternoon.
Marubi National Museum of Photography, Shkodër
Albania's national photo archive, from 1858 onwards. The best museum in the north and a natural rainy-day pairing with Rozafa Castle when the clouds lift.
Winery tastings in Berat and around Pogradec
October is harvest month. Cobo and Nurellari near Berat run tastings amid the crush; book a day ahead. Around Pogradec and Korçë, small producers open cellar doors during the grape and apple harvest.
Benja thermal baths, Përmet
Open-air but steaming hot — soaking in the stone Ottoman-era pools under the Katiu bridge is an autumn experience, not a summer one, and October is arguably the best month for it.
Voskopojë churches, near Korçë
Eighteenth-century frescoed basilicas in a half-abandoned mountain village. Atmospheric in mist and rain, with hardly any other visitors.
Gjirokastër Castle and museums
The castle's vaulted galleries, the arms museum and the Old Bazaar's artisan shops fill a full grey day, and the stone city looks its best under low cloud.
