Albania in Winter
December – February

Is Winter a good time to visit?
Winter splits Albania in two. Coastal cities stay mild at 11–14°C and fully open, while the northern Alps sit under deep snow. It is the cheapest season, ideal for Tirana, Shkodër, Berat and Korçë — and the wrong season for beaches or high-mountain hiking.
Season highlights
- Tirana's Christmas market and New Year celebrations
- Deep snow in Theth, Valbona, Dardhë and Voskopojë
- Shkodra Carnival in February
- Castles, museums and UNESCO towns with no other visitors
- The lowest hotel and car hire prices of the year
Month by month
Festive Tirana, first proper snow and low prices outside New Year.
The quietest, cheapest month — wet on the coast, snowy in the north.
Deepest snow, Shkodra Carnival and slightly brighter days.
Planning tips
- • Rent with winter tyres if you plan to drive north or to Korçë.
- • Treat the Theth, Valbona and Kelmend roads as weather-dependent all winter.
- • Book New Year accommodation months ahead; the rest of winter is easy.
- • Build indoor options into every day — this is the wettest part of the year.
Albania in Winter FAQ
Is Albania open in winter?
Cities, museums, castles and archaeological sites operate normally with winter hours. Riviera resorts, boat tours and most mountain guesthouses close from November until spring.
Is Albania cold in winter?
The coast is mild at 11–14°C by day. Inland Korçë and the northern Alps are genuinely cold, with sub-zero nights and lasting snow above 900 m.
Can you ski in Albania?
On a small scale, at Dardhë near Korçë and informally around Voskopojë. It is a fun add-on rather than a ski holiday destination.
Is winter the cheapest time to visit Albania?
Yes. January and February are the cheapest months of the year for hotels, flights and car hire, with the New Year week the only exception.
