Beaches, hiking and driving in December

Beaches

Not a beach month. Coastal towns are quiet and cheap, and a windy Vlorë or Durrës promenade walk followed by seafood is the realistic version of a coast day.

Hiking

Low-level walks only, and weather-dependent. Dajti, Lake Shkodra and the Vjosa banks work; the Alps require winter equipment and local guidance.

Road trips

Main roads are clear but daylight is at its shortest, around nine hours. Mountain roads to Theth, Valbona and Kelmend can close with snow. Rent with winter tyres and never plan mountain arrivals after 15:00.

What to pack for Albania in December

  • Warm waterproof coat

Albania in December FAQ

Is December a good time to visit Albania?

Yes for a festive, low-cost city break. Tirana runs a Christmas market, coastal days stay near 14°C, and the Alps have snow. It is not a month for beaches or serious hiking.

Does it snow in Albania in December?

In the mountains, yes — Theth, Valbona, Dardhë and Voskopojë usually have lasting snow by late December. Snow in Tirana or on the coast is rare.

Is Albania cold in December?

The coast is mild at about 14°C by day, Tirana cooler at 12°C with 3°C nights, and the Alps genuinely cold with sub-zero nights.

What is Christmas like in Albania?

Albania is religiously mixed, so Christmas is celebrated warmly but modestly, with the biggest public festivities in Catholic Shkodër and a large secular market and light display in Tirana. New Year is the bigger national celebration.

Is Albania expensive at New Year?

For that week, yes. Hotels in Tirana and mountain guesthouses charge peak rates from around 28 December to 2 January and sell out well in advance.

Can you swim in Albania in December?

Not comfortably. The sea drops to about 16°C early in the month and continues cooling, with no beach services open.
