Albania consistently ranks above the European average for tourist safety. Violent crime against foreigners is genuinely rare, the police are visible in tourist areas, and the locals are famous across the Balkans for hospitality.

What to actually watch out for

• Driving — By far the biggest real risk. Roads are narrow, mountain switchbacks are unforgiving, and local driving can be aggressive. Avoid driving at night outside major cities.
• Petty theft in Tirana and Durrës — Standard city pickpocketing in busy squares and on buses. Treat your bag the way you would in Rome or Barcelona.
