The beach runs several kilometres. The northern end, closest to Durrës, is the busiest and noisiest. Walk or drive 2–3 km south towards Qerret and Mali i Robit and the crowds thin out noticeably, the sand is cleaner and the sunbed touts are less aggressive. The far southern end near the pine belt is the quietest place to spread a towel for free.

History & Heritage
Golem was farmland and pine scrub within living memory. Until the 1980s the coast south of Durrës was a thin line of state-run rest houses and cooperative fields, with the beach itself largely empty apart from the concrete bunkers still half-buried in the dunes at Mali i Robit. Durrës, 12 km north, carried all the coastal tourism of the period: it had the Adriatic's oldest continuously used port, a Roman amphitheatre from the 2nd century AD, and the state hotels that Party-approved holidaymakers were allocated each summer.
Everything here changed after 1991. When internal movement and private building were freed up, families from Tirana, Elbasan and the Dibra highlands bought or occupied plots along the Golem strip, and the villas, guesthouses and mid-rise hotels that now line the road went up in barely two decades — much of it unplanned, which is why the resort has no old centre and no single promenade. The completion of the Tirana–Durrës highway in the late 1990s sealed Golem's role: a 45-minute drive from the capital turned it into the default weekend beach for a city of 600,000, and later into the largest concentration of package hotels in Albania.
