How the Koman ferry works
The Koman–Fierza ferry is the flagship experience of no-car Albania. Two operators run daily (May–October): the Berisha (larger, more comfortable, 09:00 departure) and the Alpin (smaller, 09:30). Both take 2 h 45 min through the fjord-like canyon on the former Drin river.
Every guesthouse in Shkodër and Tirana sells a combined ticket: shuttle from Shkodër at 05:30, ferry, shuttle from Fierza to Valbonë, for ≈ €30 total. Book 24–48 hours ahead in July–August. Vehicles are allowed but you don't need one for this itinerary.
Skipping the hike: alternatives to Valbonë–Theth
The 17-km mountain hike is glorious but not for everyone. If you skip: take a shared 4x4 from Valbonë back to Bajram Curri, then the paved road across to Theth via the new SH21 — 5 hours total for €30/person. You still see both valleys, just from a vehicle.
The second alternative is skipping Theth entirely: stay two nights in Valbonë, then bus back to Shkodër via Bajram Curri, and reach Berat the same afternoon. You lose the Alps' most iconic village but save an exhausting day.

Can I hire a guide for the Valbonë–Theth hike?
Yes. Guides cost €40–€60/day and are worth it if you're solo or nervous about navigation. The trail is well-marked (red-and-white blazes) but the descent has some exposure. Book through your Valbonë guesthouse.
How do I get from Theth back to civilization?
Shared 4x4s from Theth to Shkodër leave every morning around 07:00 and 12:00 in season (€15/person, 2 hours on the paved SH21). Book through your guesthouse the night before.
Is 10 days without a car harder than 10 days with a car?
Longer, not harder. Add about 20% to daily travel time. In exchange you avoid navigation stress, parking scams and the €300+ car rental. Many travellers say it's the more authentic way to experience Albania.
Any villages I have to skip without a car?
Yes — remote spots like Cape of Rodon, Bovilla Lake, Divjakë and Palasë beach are impractical without wheels. Book a day tour from Tirana or Sarandë for one or two of them if they're on your list.
