Berat in winter
Berat is one of the easiest winter trips from Tirana: lower elevation than the mountains, a UNESCO-listed old town and almost no summer crowds.
Why visit Berat in winter
- Mangalem and Gorica quarters are atmospheric and quiet off-season.
- The inhabited castle area works as a half-day visit between showers.
- Reachable from Tirana by main roads, so it rarely depends on mountain access.
What to do
- Walk up to the castle area in daylight.
- Cross the Gorica bridge for views of the Mangalem houses.
- Visit the Onufri Museum inside the castle (confirm winter opening hours).
Weather, access and safety
- Steep stone lanes become slippery in rain — wear shoes with grip.
- Daylight is short; start the castle climb before mid-afternoon.
- Some seasonal guesthouses close; confirm heating and opening before booking.
General planning notes, not a forecast. Check current weather and ARRSH road notices before travelling.
Simple winter plan
Overnight: arrive late morning, castle in the afternoon light, Gorica riverside in the evening, Mangalem lanes the next morning before returning.
