6 Albanian beaches that get overrun in August — and where to go instead
Albania's coast is still spectacular in August. It's just that everyone knows it. Here's the honest crowd report — and a better swap for each.

Albania in August is a paradox. The water is at its warmest, the light is at its best — and the beaches that make the postcards are the ones you'll enjoy least.
This isn't a list of bad beaches. Every place below is genuinely beautiful. It's a list of places where the August version bears little resemblance to the photos, plus the alternative we'd point a friend towards on the same stretch of coast.
1. Ksamil
The Maldives comparison stops working somewhere around 10am in August.

Ksamil's islets and clear water deserve the reputation. What the photos never show is the sunbed density in peak season — the sand between the loungers can vanish entirely, and the small bays fill from mid-morning.
It's still worth seeing. Just treat it as a sunrise or late-afternoon stop rather than a full beach day, and stay somewhere with a quieter shore.
Tip: Swap: Borsh Beach, an hour north, is the longest beach on the Riviera and never feels full.

Beach clubs have taken the best sections — and the music starts early.

Dhërmi's 5km of shore is stunning, but the central stretch is now dominated by beach clubs and festival crowds in August. If you came for silence and turquoise water, you'll find the first part hard.
The village above and the coves either side are a completely different experience from the main beach strip.
Tip: Swap: Gjipe Beach, reached by a short hike or boat, filters out the crowds by design.

Closest beach to Tirana, and it shows every weekend.

Durrës is the default coast for the capital, which makes it easy to reach and hard to enjoy in high summer. The main promenade beaches are wall-to-wall from Friday afternoon.
It has real history — a Roman amphitheatre in the middle of the city — so it's worth a day, just not a swimming day in August.
Tip: Swap: Spille Beach in Kavajë has long dark sand and a fraction of the people.

Wonderful town, but the central beach is the busiest thing about it.

Himarë is one of the Riviera's most likeable bases: a hilltop old town, good seafood, an easy pace. The town beach in August, however, is where every day-tripper on the coastal road stops.
Stay in Himarë by all means — just walk or drive to the coves outside town for the water.
Tip: Swap: Qeparo, ten minutes south, keeps its old-village calm.

A city waterfront, not a beach escape.
Sarandë is the Riviera's transport hub — ferries from Corfu, buses everywhere — and that's its strength. The town beaches are narrow, built-up and busy, which is fine if you understand what you're getting.
Use it as a base and a launchpad, not a place to spend a whole beach week.
Tip: Swap: Piqeras, on the road north, has quiet pebble coves under a hillside village.

Fine sand, shallow water — and a very Albanian August weekend.

Qerret and neighbouring Golem are the classic family beaches near Durrës: soft grey sand, water shallow enough for small children, bars every few metres.
That combination makes them exceptionally popular with domestic holidaymakers in August. Midweek is a different, much better place.
Tip: Swap: Velipojë, further north near Shkodër, offers the same shallow-water formula with more space.

Frequently asked questions
Is August a bad time to visit Albania?
Not bad — busy. The weather is reliable and the sea is warm, but the famous beaches, coastal roads and parking are all at their most crowded, and accommodation prices peak.
Which month is best for beaches in Albania?
June and September give warm sea temperatures with far smaller crowds. Late September is often the sweet spot on the Riviera.
Are Albanian beaches still cheap in August?
Sunbeds, accommodation and boat trips all rise sharply in August compared with June or September, though prices remain lower than most of the Mediterranean.
