View over Tirana from Mount Dajti

Most travellers give Tirana one day and move on. Give it three and use it as a hub instead — almost everything in central Albania is a comfortable return trip from the capital.

Ordered roughly by effort, from a cable car ride to a full day on the road.

1. Mount Dajti

A 15-minute cable car from the edge of the city to a mountain ridge.

Mount Dajti, Albania

The Dajti Ekspres lifts you out of Tirana's heat to pine forest, ridge restaurants and a view over the whole plain. It's the highest reward-per-effort trip in Albania.

Tip: Go late afternoon for the light, and check the last descent time.

2. Bovilla Lake

Turquoise reservoir, limestone cliffs, short steep viewpoint climb.

Bovilla Lake, Albania

Under an hour from the centre and a genuinely dramatic landscape. Wear proper shoes for the final scramble.

3. Krujë Castle

Skanderbeg's fortress and the best-known old bazaar in the country.

Krujë Castle, Albania

Forty minutes north: a hilltop castle, the Skanderbeg Museum, and a cobbled bazaar of carpets, antiques and copperware.

Easy to combine with a lunch stop on the way back.

4. Durrës

Roman amphitheatre in the middle of a working port city.

Durrës, Albania

Skip the summer beach and go for the archaeology — the amphitheatre is among the largest in the Balkans and sits right in the centre.

5. Berat

UNESCO stone houses under a castle people still live in.

Berat, Albania

Two hours south, and the single best day trip if you only take one. The castle quarter is inhabited, not preserved behind glass.

Tip: Leave early — the drive back after dark is slower than the map suggests.

6. Shkodër

Lake city, Rozafa Castle, and the gateway to the Alps.

Shkodër, Albania

Flat, cyclable and full of cafés, with a castle above the confluence of three rivers. Also where any Theth or Koman trip begins.

7. Apollonia

A Greek city in open countryside, usually empty.

Apollonia, Albania

The longest drive on this list, and the quietest ruin. Pair it with Ardenica monastery nearby.
