Albania Itinerary: The Perfect 4 Days
Four days is what you can steal from an office job with a Thursday-to-Sunday weekend, and it is enough to see Albania's greatest hits if you plan it right. This is a coast-focused itinerary: one UNESCO town, one hero beach town, and two Riviera days. No wasted afternoons in the car.

Day 1: Tirana → Berat
Morning
Fly into Tirana, pick up your rental car and drive straight south to Berat via the A1 and SH4. Roads are excellent and toll-free.
Afternoon
Check into a Mangalem guesthouse. Walk up to Berat Castle before it closes and visit the Onufri Iconography Museum.
Evening
Sunset from the Gorica bridge, then a candle-lit dinner at Home Made Food Lili.

Why 4 days works
Four days is the shortest window that still feels like a trip and not a sprint. You get one UNESCO Ottoman town, one archaeological UNESCO site, the Blue Eye, a full Riviera evening and Tirana in the same loop. The trade-off is that you skip Theth, the Alps and Lake Ohrid entirely.
If you have five days or more, add a Riviera rest day between Ksamil and Himarë. Six days lets you swap Gjirokastër for Korçë and Lake Ohrid; seven opens the Alps. Below five days, drop this whole loop and just stay in Tirana and Berat.

Is 4 days enough for Albania?
It's enough for a first impression of the south. You'll see two UNESCO sites, the Blue Eye, Ksamil, Himarë and the Llogara Pass. You won't have time for the Albanian Alps, Lake Ohrid or Tirana in depth — save those for a return trip.
Should I fly in and out of Tirana?
Yes. Tirana International (TIA) is the only large airport and connects to most European cities. All rental agencies are inside the terminal. Do not fly into Corfu — you cannot rent a car in Corfu for use in Albania.
What's the best month for a 4-day Albania trip?
Late May, early June and September. Coastal water is 22–26 °C, hotels cost 30% less than August, and roads are quiet. October is fine if you accept some closures on the Riviera.
Can I do this itinerary in reverse?
Yes. Some travellers prefer Tirana → Vlorë → Himarë → Ksamil → Gjirokastër → Berat → Tirana. The driving totals are identical but you end on Berat's Ottoman streets rather than a Riviera sunset — a milder finale.
How much fuel will I use?
About 50–65 litres for a small petrol car over 720 km — roughly €75–€95 at 2026 prices (€1.50/L). Fill up in Berat, Sarandë and Vlorë; the mountain sections between Gjirokastër and Ksamil have fewer stations.
Are 4 days enough to see the Riviera?

Can families do this itinerary?
Yes — the roads are safe, restaurants are welcoming, and Ksamil beaches are wadeable for small children. Just avoid the Blue Eye entrance path (slippery boardwalks) for toddlers, and cap the daily driving at 3 hours for kids.
Do I need to book hotels in advance?
In July and August yes — Ksamil is fully booked 6–8 weeks ahead. In May, June, September and October you can book 3–5 days ahead. Berat and Gjirokastër guesthouses often have last-minute rooms.
