How to plan your Albanian road trip

Step 1 — Pick your length

Under 4 days: don't rent a car; stay in Tirana with day trips. 4–5 days: focus on the south loop. 7 days: the classic Berat–Gjirokastër–Riviera. 10 days or more: add the Alps and Lake Koman.

Step 2 — Pick your season

May–June and September are the strongest all-round months. July–August are hot and busy but every restaurant is open. October is beautiful with some Riviera closures. November–April: no Riviera, no Alps.

Step 3 — Pick your vehicle

Small SUV (Duster, Jimny, Yaris Cross) is ideal: clearance for SH21 to Theth, small enough for Berat's alleys. Book 3 weeks ahead in July–August. Always take full CDW insurance.

Step 4 — Book strategically

Ksamil sells out 6–8 weeks ahead in July/August. Theth guesthouses fill 8 weeks ahead. Everything else you can book 3–5 days out except peak weekends.

Step 5 — Prep offline

Download Google Maps offline for the whole country before you leave Tirana. Save Blue Eye, Butrint, Llogara viewpoint and your accommodation pins.

Frequently asked questions

Which Albania road trip route is best for first-timers?

The 7-day Grand Tour (South) is the sweet spot: Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër, Ksamil, Himarë and the Llogara Pass with no leg longer than 3 h 30 min. If you have less time, the 5-day Classic Loop covers the same highlights minus one Riviera night.

Which route is best for families with young children?

The Family Route (8 days). Short driving days, wadeable Ksamil beaches, Krujë Castle for storybook photos, no mountain hairpins after dark. Cap driving at 3 hours per day with kids under 8.

Which route covers the Albanian Alps?

The 10-day Alps + South Loop and the dedicated Northern Alps Route both include Lake Koman's ferry, Valbonë and Theth.

Are tolls a concern on Albanian roads?

Only one: the Tirana–Kukës A1 has a €5 toll at Rrëshen. Everything else is free.

Which months are best overall?

Late May, June and September for sea temperature, dry roads, green mountains and 30% cheaper hotels than August.

How difficult is Albanian mountain driving?

Moderate. Paved but narrow. Never after dark or in rain.

Can I combine two of these routes?

Yes — the 10-day loop is essentially the Alps Route + the South Coast Route stitched via Tirana. Add 2–3 days for a 14-day grand tour.

Do I need a 4x4?

No. A small SUV is more than enough for every route on this map.

Can I finish my road trip in a different city from where I started?

Yes but expect a one-way fee: €50–€120 depending on the agency. Tirana → Sarandë is the most common one-way; Tirana → Podgorica (Montenegro) is offered by a few agencies for €150–€200.
