Day 2: Berat → Gjirokastër

Every road on this 5-day loop is paved and well-signposted. The A1, A2 and A3 motorways are toll-free and smooth. The SH8 along the Riviera is the star of the trip — narrow, twisty and unforgettable — but requires focus, especially descending the Llogara Pass. Never drive it after dark.
Fuel is easy to find. Kastrati and Gulf are the two dominant chains and both accept EU credit cards. Fill up in Sarandë before heading north; the next reliable station is past Vlorë.
Car rental in Albania: what to know
Prices in 2026 start around €25/day for an economy manual and €55/day for a small automatic SUV. Book at least 3 weeks ahead for July–August. Full CDW insurance is worth the €5–€8/day.

Tirana International Airport (TIA/Rinas) is the only large airport. Wizz Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines all fly there. Corfu (CFU) works if you plan to enter via the Saranda ferry, but you can't rent a car in Corfu for use in Albania.
