October is the month Albania keeps for itself. The August crowds are gone, the sea is still warm enough to swim in for the first two or three weeks, the light turns golden, and hotel prices fall by a third or more.
If you can only travel outside high summer, this is the month to choose.

The month splits neatly in two. The first fortnight is effectively late summer: 25 °C, dry, swimmable. The second fortnight cools and the Adriatic rain belt arrives, especially in the north around Shkodër.
Sea temperature: 22 °C at the start of the month, 20 °C by the end — comfortably swimmable early, brisk but fine later.
What's open and what's closed
Open all month: Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër and every city; Butrint, Apollonia, Rozafa and all archaeological sites; the Blue Eye; Koman ferry; national parks.
Open the first half, closing mid-month: most Riviera beach clubs, sunbed operators, seasonal restaurants in Ksamil, Dhërmi and Himara, and boat tours from Saranda.
Closing for winter around late October: Theth and Valbona guesthouses (the pass becomes risky after the first snow), some Riviera hotels, the Corfu ferry's high-frequency schedule.
Rule of thumb: book the coast for the first two weeks of October; book the cities and the south for anytime in the month.

Accommodation runs 30–45% below August and roughly 15–25% below September. Car rental is at shoulder pricing — 22–30 EUR/day for a hatchback, versus 45–65 in August. Flights from Northern Europe drop sharply after the first week.

What to do in October
Swim, in the first half
Ksamil, Borsh, Himara and Dhërmi at 22 °C with the beach clubs half-empty is the version of the Riviera everyone wishes they'd found in August. Bring your own towel and shade after mid-month — the loungers start disappearing.
Drive the Riviera without queueing

Walk into empty ruins
Butrint in October has a fraction of its summer visitors and none of the heat. Apollonia, Bylis and Rozafa are similar. Gjirokastër and Berat are finally walkable at midday.
Autumn colour and chestnuts in the Alps
Theth, Valbona and Kelmend turn gold in the first three weeks. Hike early in the month — after mid-October, weather on the Theth–Valbona pass is unreliable and guesthouses begin closing.
Harvest season
October is olive harvest and raki distilling season. In Berat, Vlorë and the Përmet valley you'll see the nets under the trees and be offered the results. Pomegranates, figs, chestnuts and new wine are everywhere in the markets.
Festivals
Tirana's autumn cultural season starts, with jazz and film festivals through the month. Korça's brewing and cultural events fall in late September/early October.
