Berat & Gjirokastër in May: UNESCO Towns in Spring
Why May is one of the best months for Albania's two Ottoman-era UNESCO towns: warm days, green hills and walkable old quarters.
Berat and Gjirokastër are Albania's two UNESCO-listed Ottoman-era towns, and May is one of the best months to see them. Days are warm enough for castle walks but not yet summer-hot, the hills are green and the steep cobbled lanes are quieter than in July and August.
Why visit in May?
Both towns involve a lot of uphill walking on polished stone. May's temperatures make that comfortable, and evenings are pleasant for dinner outside. For the national picture, see Albania in May.
Berat in May
- Walk up to the inhabited castle quarter (Kalaja) and the Onufri Iconographic Museum.
- Cross the Gorica bridge for the classic view of Mangalem's windowed houses.
- Consider a day out to the Osumi Canyon area — conditions depend on recent rain, so ask locally.

Combining the two
The drive between Berat and Gjirokastër takes a few hours via Fier and Tepelenë. Many travellers continue south to the coast — by late May the sea is starting to warm; see Sarandë & Ksamil in June.
