Best time for this road trip

May, June and September are particularly attractive for a road trip: warm weather, open mountain roads and manageable crowds.

July and August provide the best beach atmosphere but are also the busiest and most expensive months.

For the Albanian Alps, always check current mountain and road conditions before travelling. The Theth–Valbona crossing is seasonal and depends on snow conditions.

    What car should you rent?

For this itinerary, a small SUV is a practical choice. You don't necessarily need a large 4×4 for the complete route, but ground clearance and comfort become more important when travelling through mountain areas.

Before renting, check insurance coverage, deposit requirements, mileage restrictions, cross-border permissions, fuel policy, road restrictions and emergency assistance.

How much does a 10-day Albania road trip cost?

Your total budget depends on accommodation, car rental, fuel, restaurants and activities.

A budget traveller can keep costs relatively low by staying in guesthouses and eating locally. Couples looking for boutique hotels and better restaurants should expect a higher daily budget. Peak summer will generally cost more than May, June or September.

    Final route

    Tirana → Shkodër → Lake Koman → Valbona → Theth → Berat → Gjirokastër → Blue Eye → Ksamil → Butrint → Riviera → Llogara → Tirana.

This route combines the two sides of Albania that make the country so special: the mountains and the sea. For more Albania road-trip routes, compare itineraries on Albania Routes and choose a route based on your available days, interests and driving style.

    Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough for an Albania road trip?

Yes. Ten days covers Tirana, the Alps (Koman ferry, Valbona, Theth), two UNESCO cities, the Blue Eye, Ksamil, Butrint and the Riviera at a comfortable pace of roughly 2 hours of driving per day.

When is the best time for an Albania road trip in 2027?

May, June and September balance good weather, open mountain roads and lower prices. July and August have the liveliest beaches but the heaviest traffic and highest costs. Alpine roads and the Theth–Valbona crossing are seasonal.

Do I need a 4×4 for this route?

No. A small SUV with decent ground clearance is enough for the full loop. The Theth road is paved, and everything else on this itinerary is normal asphalt. A 4×4 is only useful for remote mountain tracks off this route.

How long is the drive in total?

Around 1,350 km and roughly 22 hours behind the wheel across ten days, plus the Lake Koman ferry crossing.

Should I drive the route clockwise or start in the north?

Start north. Doing the Alps first while you're fresh means the toughest logistics come early and the last days are easy coastal driving close to Tirana airport.

Can I do this itinerary without a car?

Partly. Furgons and buses connect Tirana, Shkodër, Berat, Gjirokastër and Sarandë, but the Riviera stops and mountain villages are far slower. Add two extra days if you travel by public transport.

    Final thoughts

Albania rewards travellers who plan a little and improvise a lot. Roads change faster than guidebooks are printed, family-run guesthouses swap owners between seasons, and the best meals almost always come from the place with no menu on the wall. Use this guide as a spine — then let curiosity fill in the days.
