Tirana Airport to Saranda
Saranda is roughly 275 km south of Tirana Airport — about 4 to 4 hours 45 minutes by car, or most of a day by public bus via Tirana.
Saranda is the gateway to the southern Riviera, Butrint and Ksamil — and it is a long way from the airport. This is the single most underestimated journey in Albanian trip planning: people book a 22:00 landing and a Saranda hotel for the same night.
There is no direct public bus from the airport to most Albanian towns. The usual public-transport pattern is: airport bus into Tirana, then an intercity bus or furgon (shared minibus) from the relevant Tirana terminal.

The route itself
- • The fast route is the SH4 inland via Fier, Tepelenë and Gjirokastër, then over to the coast — not the scenic Riviera coast road.
- • The coastal alternative via Llogara Pass is far more beautiful and adds roughly an hour plus stops.
- • Breaking the drive in Berat or Gjirokastër turns a hard transfer day into a good one.
Arrival tips
- • Landing after 15:00? Sleep in Tirana, Berat or Gjirokastër and continue in the morning.
- • Fuel up before the mountain sections — stations thin out between Tepelenë and the coast.
Landing late at night?
Driving the last stretch to Saranda in the dark on your first night in the country is not recommended, especially on the Llogara route. Book a night closer to the airport instead.
