Tirana Airport to Theth
Theth is about 160 km from Tirana Airport via Shkodër — roughly 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours, with the final mountain section the slowest part.
Theth sits in a glacial valley in the Albanian Alps, and getting there is part of the experience. There is no direct airport transport — everything goes through Shkodër, where the morning vans to Theth depart.

Check your rental agreement — some companies restrict cars on the Theth road. If you hike Theth to Valbona you'll also need a plan to retrieve the car.
The route itself
- • Route: airport → SH1 to Shkodër → the mountain road via Boga and the Thore Pass into Theth.
- • The final stretch is slow regardless of vehicle. Do not plan to arrive after dark on your first day.
- • If you hike on to Valbona, most people return to Shkodër by Koman ferry rather than retracing the road.
Arrival tips
- • Mobile signal in the valley is patchy. Download offline maps before you leave Shkodër.
- • Many guesthouses are cash-only and include dinner and breakfast in the room rate.
- • Nights are cold even in August — bring a fleece.
Landing late at night?
Don't. A flight arrival and the Theth road in the same day only works if you land in the morning; otherwise stay in Shkodër and go up the next day.
